I just wanna mention that I'm surprised that no one else mentioned that the new title for Buffy that Scott Allie hinted to us earlier was revealed this issue.

Buffy: The Chain.

Sounds cool. :)

I think that that's actually only the title for issue #5.

IIRC, Scott did say that the title for the Buffy comics will change from "Season 8" to something else starting from issue 5, hence why I thought it was The Chain. :)

I can't find the interview, though.

On further thought, The Chain obviously refers to the chain tying up Buffy, Spike and Angel in issue 3. Issue 5 will be straight pornography.

By Jove, I think you're right.

I mean, there was all that hinting with the "XXX" ....

No, it was from Issue 6 on.

I really have nothing to add... just to say thanks to everyone that posts such thoughtful, respectful ideas and opinions.

And, thank you to all who are so much better at reading and ascertaining comic books. This is my first foray into the media, and I admit to not being able to follow it very well. I am glad I have a place to go for answers! :)

*cries*
I would really die if that were true.

Hello my fellow obsessives. There are some things in issues 3 and 4 I'm not too clear on. If anyone has any answers they'd be much appreciated.

(1) When Ethan is in the three Xs, he says to Buffy 'Where am I?' Does he not know or is he just getting her to say so she thinks it through?
And related to that question is this: a bit earlier he says 'I can't see outside myself'. Does that mean he can't see outside the dreamspace to where Amy is? So the statement is something like 'I'm not really into Nirvana myself'
Or does he mean he actually can't see outside where he is? 'I can't see outside MYSELF'

(2) Ok so Amy lays a trap for Willow. She calls it a 'rope-a-dope' and Warren is there waiting for her. But what? Wasn't Amy shocked to see Willow in issue 2? How did she plan this thing? Did she communicate telepathically with Warren?

(3) What's your take on Willow saying to those 5 whatsits 'Would that be free as in 'unbound' or free as in the other thing?' What's the other thing?

(4) 'Your grammar is not so much'. Wait, that's not a question. I just love that line.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

I'm no expert, but I'll give this a shot:

1) I think he's trying to get her to work things out. If he didn't know where he was, how would he know the cell is number 30? As for not seeing outside himself, I think he was referring to the fact that, while he can wander the dreamspace, that doesn't help him seeing things in the real world. He knows Buffy, so he's able to visit her dreamspace, but he hasn't a clue who Amy is, so he'd never even think to go to hers. It's not like he can wake up, pop out of his cell, and spy Amy doing her evil deeds.

2) The real answer? Probably a plothole. I suppose you could weave some in-story explanation, but my suspicion is that it would be thin at best.

3) I think that those five were the mysterious Coven that we heard so much about in seasons 6 and 7. The first three seem to be related to the elements. My favourite explanation so far is that they represent Earth, Water, Fire, Wookie and Homework.

2. Maybe she knew Willow would sense the amount of magic used to reanimate the zombies and she'd come to the rescue?

3. I took it to mean death.

4. Yeah, I don't get that line (and apparently I'm the only one :) ). What does that mean? And why is it funny?

Buffy's dissing Xander's grammar after Xander flubs up with, "I'll watcher your butt, lady." And she says it in a quirky Jossian way. Hence, the funny.

Oh of course. Bit dim of me not to get that. Thanks.

Well, she's criticising his grammar in a gramatically incorrect way. When I explain it like that it doesn't sound all that funny ... But I think the humour partly comes from the rhythm of the whole exchange.

And on the point of line-not-getting I don't understand Xander's 'Magic. It's all done with mirrors'. Everyones' praise of that line makes me feel stupid. Is it as in 'magic is all smoke and mirrors'?

I think you're right, NimNams. It just seems like quite a big one to me. Ah well.

That was my first thought. I read someone else suggesting that they were different manifestations of Willow's mind. But they say stuff like 'he's lobotimizing YOU' instead of 'US' which makes me think they're probably not Willows.
